 Casa Grande Receives Top Honors at AZ Water Association Conference 


City Employee Named "Arizona Operator of the Year"

The City of Casa Grande once again received statewide recognition for its wastewater plant expansion project, this time from the Arizona Water Association.  The City's Water Reclamation Facility was selected as the 2013 "Wastewater Treatment Plant of the Year - Small System" category.  City employee Danny Allen was also recognized as the 2013 "Arizona Operator of the Year-Wastewater Collection-Small System" category.  The awards were presented on May 1 during the 86th Annual Arizona Water Association Conference in Glendale.

Last year the City completed an expansion project at the Water Reclamation Facility located at 1194 W. Kortsen Road, which implemented several new stations and processing technologies that doubled wastewater capacity from 6 million gallons a day to 12 million gallons a day.  The project, which cost $58 million dollars, was financed by the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority (WIFA).  WIFA previously awarded the expansion project the 2012 "Clean Water Project of the Year" in February.

"We're honored to receive this award and thank everyone who was involved in the expansion project," said Public Works Director Kevin Louis.  "We especially thank our wastewater staff for their hard work in coordinating the expansion while still providing service to our residents."
 
Award recipient Danny Allen has worked for the City of Casa Grande for over 4 years as a wastewater treatment plant operator.   He is responsible for overseeing all wastewater collection operations, including regulating and maintaining the system flow of the collection systems and lift stations.  He also inspects and cleans the collection system and collects water samples for tests, as well as manage the City's small water company on the west side of the city limits.  Allen was nominated for the award by Legend Technical Services, Inc., a company that provides environmental workshops for organizations.

AZ Water Association selection committee member Mark Martinez said, "Danny stood out as somebody who is exceptional as far as everything that he does and his willingness to help whenever there are problems."

Casa Grande Public Works Director Kevin Louis praised Allen by saying, "Danny is a great employee because he takes ownership in every task he is assigned.  His passion for learning and the level of positive energy he brings with him to his job pays off in exceptional work quality and quantity."

Fellow co-worker Jay Mull also lauded Allen for his award.  "My greatest appreciation of Danny is that he has stepped up and taken on more responsibilities with commitment and I have found him to be someone that I can depend on," said Mull.

Allen is professionally certified in wastewater and water treatment, collections, and water distribution.  He was born and raised in Casa Grande, where he lives with his family.

The AZ Water Association awards are presented to individuals and facilities that have sustained notable outstanding service in the categories pertaining to water, wastewater, collections and distribution in small and large communities.  Award recipients are selected based on their involvement and knowledge in operations, new technology and participation in a team environment and positive attitude. The City of Casa Grande has been recognized by national non-profit KaBOOM! as a 2013 Playful City USA community for its efforts to give children the childhood they deserve by providing ample opportunities for play. Casa Grande was one of only 217 communities across the country to earn this honor. This is the fifth year Casa Grande has earned the national recognition.

Today's generation of children play less than any previous generation despite the vast benefits of play. The Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics reports that play is essential to the social, emotional, cognitive and physical well-being of children.

Casa Grande has 11 neighborhood parks, 5 community parks and 3 regional parks. All of the parks are open to residents and visitors. Most neighborhood parks offer an array of amenities, including a children's play area and basketball courts. Community parks offer similar amenities and are used regularly to host city-wide events. Casa Grande Mountain Park has 20 miles of hiking trails, providing families with an opportunity to recreate in an outdoor setting surrounded by beautiful short and long range views, plus spectacular desert vegetation. The trails were constructed entirely by volunteers and offer varying levels of difficulty.

The City of Casa Grande also offers many recreation programs for youth and adults of all ages. From swimming lessons to youth sports and special interest classes, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The Len Colla Recreation Center is a multi-purpose recreation center that features a full size gymnasium that provides indoor play opportunities year round.

Casa Grande was named a 2012 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban management. This is the 6th year Casa Grande has earned the national designation. Arizona State Forester Scott Hunt presented the City with the award on Friday, April 26 at the state capitol in Phoenix.

In order to be considered a Tree City USA community, cities must have a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, a tree board/department and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The Casa Grande Parks Division partners with many community groups in order to maintain the 2,300 trees located in parks and rights of way. Volunteer groups include the Casa Grande Valley Daughters of the American Revolution and youth who assist in tree maintenance as part of their Eagle Scout project. Last year, city staff trimmed over 650 trees.

Cleaner air, improved storm water management, energy savings and increased property values and commercial activity are among the benefits enjoyed by Tree City USA communities.

The vacation housing market is looking bright these days in part because of favorable economic conditions, but second-home sellers attribute the increase to strategic marketing as well.

“We tell people this is an important investment and not just another toy,” says Peter Colvin, co-developer of Kingfisher Cove, a luxury lakefront cottage community near Saugatuck, Mich.

For Colvin, also a longtime investment advisor, you must first create reasonably priced vacation homes, and then convince potential buyers about the financial viability of the purchase.
“You've got to assure buyers that if they want to rent it out when they’re not using it, the home could truly pay for itself,” he says.

Vacation home sales were up 10.1 percent in 2012, according to the National Association of REALTORS®’ 2013 Investment and Vacation Home Buyers Survey.

Colvin isn’t discounting broader housing-market gains over the past few years as a major factor in boosting second-home sales. With increasing employment figures, net worth stabilizing, and Americans having a little extra money in their pockets, investing in a second home is becoming an increasingly popular trend.
“It’s a whole different world right now,” he says. “As the pent-up demand shows itself and interest rates hold low, I think it’ll create even better conditions to buy a second home. We’re back to where things should be.”
